"The remote landscape of Sutherland, in the north west of Scotland, is dotted with huge isolated monolithic mountains that dominate the surrounding landscape. This shot was taken close to Suilven (shown right), one of the most well known and imposing mountains in the area. Loch Druim Suardalain is a good location in the autumn to take photographs looking south west towards the mountain and the rising sun. I was lucky with the conditions on this particular early morning visit. The clouds were painted with the wonderful hues of the rising sun and a light wind was producing some attractive ripples on the water's surface whilst still allowing some good reflections of the surrounding scene. I tried a few different compositions. The attractive ripples in the water were lost in very wide angle shots, so I selected a landscape format at a focal length of about 50mm to produce what I felt were the most effective results as shown in this image."
