"On a calm autumn morning, I arrived at Loch Maree before sunrise in anticipation of photographing some early morning mist. This picture was taken just after the sun had risen above the surrounding mountains, as the first rays of sunlight reached the loch's surface. The scene was instantly changed to embody the wonderful warm hues of autumn; a thin ephemeral mist added that extra magical finishing touch. The sun and its reflection are only just outside of the top and bottom of the frame and even after attaching a long hood to the telephoto lens I used, a large amount of lens flare was still evident as I composed the shot. I had to resort to fashioning an extended lens hood out of a couple of fold away seating mats to remove all the distracting internal reflections that were being created by the direct sunlight."

This photograph was one of the highly commended entries in the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition 'Trees, Woods, & Forests' category. It was awarded a place in the awards book available from Kew Publishing.
