"The Farne Islands, lying a few miles offshore from the Northumbrian Coast, provide one of the best places in Britain to see nesting seabirds. During the summer months tens of thousands of birds nest on these islands. Regular boat trips leave from the small fishing harbour of Seahouses, to take a tour of the islands. Each of the islands has its own character, hosting a unique mix of nesting bird species. The grassy island of Inner Farne hosts a large colony of Arctic Terns. A boardwalk winds its way through the nesting birds and those nesting close to this path will often attack visitors as they pass by. A couple of times while I was looking through the viewfinder of the camera, ready with my index finger over the shutter release, a tern flew down to peck my finger and drew blood." |
