"An overhanging cornice provides the only means to traverse one section of the steep-sided Gorner Ridge. Here, the clouds spilling over the top of the ridge help to reduce the direct sunlight to a manageable amount, allowing the scene to be captured. Looking in the opposite direction about an hour earlier (smaller image above), the rising sun was hitting the summit of the Matterhorn at the start of the day."
